It’s when a couple hasn’t been able to get pregnant after trying for about a year (or six months if the woman is over 35). It’s common, and in many cases something can be done to help.
Roughly a third of the time it’s linked to the man (e.g. low or no sperm), a third to the woman (e.g. ovulation issues or blocked tubes), and the rest is a mix of both or unexplained. Your doctor will help figure out what’s going on in your situation.
If you’ve been trying for a year without success, it’s a good idea to see a doctor. They’ll check both partners and may suggest tests—for example ovulation checks and scans for you, and a semen test for your partner—to find out what might be going on.
It’s a special X-ray of the womb and tubes. A harmless dye is put inside so we can see if the tubes are open. It’s a quick, common test that helps explain why pregnancy might not be happening.
Most people are helped with simpler options first—like medicines or minor surgery. Only a small number need treatments like IVF. We’ll suggest what fits you best.
IVF is when eggs are collected and fertilized with sperm in the lab, then one or two embryos are placed back into the womb. It’s an option when other treatments haven’t worked or when tubes are blocked. We’re here to explain the process step by step.
